Sunday Holy Communion

A warm welcome to the parish church of All Saints with Holy Trinity.

Today we gather at the end of the Easter season to celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, sometimes thought of the birth of the church.

Children are always welcome in church and we understand that they do not always find it easy to be quiet! Please move around as you need with them and if toddlers need a wander that is fine as long as they remain under your supervision. Church buildings are great places to explore but please be mindful of uneven floors, sharp edges and candles. Most weeks during term time Children’s Church takes place in Fearon Hall and families re-join us in the church building in time for communion.

All those who have been baptised in any church tradition are welcome to receive communion here. If you need a gluten free wafer please speak to one of the stewards before the service.

Our services are often live streamed so that those at home can worship with us. If you wish to ensure you are not seen on camera please sit on the right side of the church as you enter, please ask a steward if you are unsure. The cameras do not film people coming up for communion.

We are part of the Inclusive Church network and as such we seek to challenge the church where it continues to discriminate against people on grounds of disability, economic power, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, learning disability, mental health, neurodiversity, or sexuality. We believe in a Church which welcomes and serves all people in the name of Jesus Christ; which is scripturally faithful; which seeks to proclaim the Gospel afresh for each generation; and which, in the power of the Holy Spirit, allows all people to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Jesus Christ. We are a work in progress and welcome anyone who wishes to journey with us.

To stay in touch and receive regular email updates from All Saints send your contact details to [email protected] or speak to a steward and leave your name, address and phone number if you would prefer.

Details of how you can support the work of

All Saints are on the back page.

Before the service begins there is an informal welcome.

The Gathering

The choir or music group may sing an introit, a piece of choral music or song reflecting the theme of the season.

Processional hymn 235 - Be present, spirit of the Lord

All stand to sing the hymn as the music begins.

Be present, Spirit of the Lord,
          let sounds of earth be dumb;
the Father’s love be shed abroad,
the dew of blessing on us poured:
               O silent Spirit, come!
               O silent Spirit, come!

In power unseen upon us rest,
          your gracious gifts impart:
a mind renewed, a spirit blessed,
a life where Christ is manifest,
               an understanding heart,
               an understanding heart.

Love’s sovereign work of grace fulfil,
          our souls to Christ incline,
intent to do the Father’s will
and stand by faith before him still
               in righteousness divine,
               in righteousness divine.

         O Spirit come, and with us stay;
          make every heart your home.
So work in us that we who pray
may walk with Christ in wisdom’s way:
               O Holy Spirit, come!
               O Holy Spirit, come!

The Pentecost Reading

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

The Lord is here.

His Spirit is with us.

Gloria in Excelsis

We all stand to sing the ancient hymn of praise.

Glory to God! Our hearts to you we raise!

Joy and peace on earth, in highest heaven praise!

Songs of adoration, Lord to you we bring,

praising your great goodness, Father, heav’nly King.

Glory to God! Our hearts to you we raise!

Joy and peace on earth, in highest heaven praise!

Son of the Father, bearing this world’s sin,

Lamb of God, have mercy, grant us peace within.

You, O Christ are holy, you alone are Lord,

with the Holy Spirit ever more adored.

Glory to God! Our hearts to you we raise!

Joy and peace on earth, in highest heaven praise!

The Collect

All remain standing as the president introduces a period of silent prayer.

Let us pray that the Spirit will work through our lives to bring Christ to the World.

Silence is kept

Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,

ignite in us your holy fire;

strengthen your children with the gift of faith,

revive your Church with the breath of love,

and renew the face of the earth,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

 The Liturgy of the Word

Reading: Acts 2.1-21

We sit to listen to the reading. At the end the following is used:

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

2.1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13 But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 “In the last days it will be, God declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams.

18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

   in those days I will pour out my Spirit;

       and they shall prophesy.

19 And I will show portents in the heaven above

and signs on the earth below,

blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

20 The sun shall be turned to darkness

   and the moon to blood,

before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading - John 20.19-23

We stand and sing together Alleluia as the Gospel book is carried to where it will be proclaimed from.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

The Gospel book is censed and then the deacon proclaims the text.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

We sing Alleluia and sit after the preacher offers an introductory prayer.

Sermon

After the sermon there is a brief pause for reflection or an anthem may be sung and then all stand to say the words of the Creed.

The Creed

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is,

seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

All sit or kneel for the prayers. In the prayers the following response is used

Lord, come to bless us

and fill us with your Spirit.

The prayers conclude with these words:

Generous God,

you sent your Holy Spirit upon your Messiah at the river Jordan,

and upon the disciples in the upper room:

in your mercy fill us with your Spirit,

hear our prayer,

and make us one in heart and mind

to serve you with joy for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

The Peace

God has made us one in Christ.

He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come,

has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace

We offer a sign of peace to one another from our seats, turning saying peace be with you.

Offertory Hymn 242 - Come, Holy Spirit, come!

Bread and wine are brought forward and the altar-table is prepared. Gifts of the people are symbolically presented in the offertory plate and the gifts of time, talent and finance that are offered to the church are blessed. See back page for details of how you can make a gift.

              Come, Holy Spirit, come!
               Inflame our souls with love,
          transforming every heart and home
               with wisdom from above.
               O let us not despise
               the humble path Christ trod,
but choose, to shame the worldly-wise,
               the foolishness of God.

Come with the gift to heal
the wounds of guilt and fear,
          and to oppression's face reveal
               the kingdom drawing near.
               Where chaos longs to reign,
               descend, O holy Dove,
and free us all to work again
               the miracles of love.

              Spirit of truth, arise;
               inspire the prophet's voice:
expose to scorn the tyrant's lies,
               and bid the poor rejoice.
               O Spirit, clear our sight,
               all prejudice remove,
and help us to discern the right,
               and covet only love.

Give us the tongues to speak,
               in every time and place,
to rich and poor, to strong and weak,
the word of love and grace.
               Enable us to hear
               the words that others bring,
          interpreting with open ear
               the special song they sing.

              Come, Holy Spirit, dance
               within our hearts today,
          our earthbound spirits to entrance,
               our mortal fears allay.
               And teach us to desire,
               all other things above,
          that self-consuming holy fire,
               the perfect gift of love!

Taking of the Bread and Wine

Blessed be God,

Who feeds the hungry,

Who raises the poor,

Who fills our praise.

Blessed be God for ever.

The president takes the bread and wine and washes their hands symbolising our desire to come together at the Lord’s table with pure hearts and minds.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

The president praises God for His mighty acts and then we sing the Sanctus using one of the following two settings:

Contemporary Music Group Setting: Mass of Restoration by Josh Blakesley and Grae McCullough

The president recalls the Last Supper and then this acclamation is used

Great is the mystery of faith:

Christ has died:

Christ is risen:

Christ will come again.

The prayer continues leading into the final words of praise

. . . in songs of everlasting praise:

Blessing and honour and glory and power

be yours for ever and ever.

Amen.

or

. . . for ever and ever.

Amen

We kneel or sit and observe a moment of silence

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with the words our Saviour taught us, each in the language closest to our hearts

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ

Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

While the remaining consecrated bread is broken and the communion assistants come

to the front we join in with singing the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)

Contemporary Music Group Setting:

Giving of Communion

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Please come forward when directed by the stewards and fold your arms across your chest if you wish to receive a prayer instead of the bread & wine. As we share communion an anthem or song may by sung by the choir or music group and then we all join in singing the communion hymns that follow, details on the notice sheet.

Communion Hymn 261 - Spirit of holiness

Spirit of holiness, wisdom and faithfulness,
Wind of the Lord, blowing strongly and free:
strength of our serving and joy of our worshipping —
Spirit of God, bring your fulness to me!

You came to interpret and teach us effectively
               all that the Saviour has spoken and done;
to glorify Jesus is all your activity —
promise and gift of the Father and Son:

You came with your gifts to supply all our poverty,
               pouring your love on the Church in her need;
you came with your fruit for our growth to maturity,
richly refreshing the souls that you feed:

You came to the world in its pride and futility,
               warning of dangers, directing us home;
          now with us and in us, we welcome your company;
Spirit of Christ, in his name you have come:

Prayer after Communion

A brief silence is kept before the president says the post communion prayer

Faithful God,

who fulfilled the promises of Easter

by sending us your Holy Spirit

and opening to every race and nation

the way of life eternal:

open our lips by your Spirit,

that every tongue may tell of your glory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

The Dismissal

Blessing of Light

We all stand

Blessed are you, sovereign God, overflowing in love.

With Pentecost dawns the age of the Spirit.

Now the flame of heaven rests on every believer.

Strong and weak, women and men tell out your word;

the young receive visions, the old receive dreams.

With the new wine of the Spirit

they proclaim your reign of love.

Amid the birth pangs of the new creation

the way of light is made known.

Source of freedom, giver of life,

blessed are you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God for ever.

Each member of the congregation receives the light from the Easter candle. As candles are lit we sing together a hymn.

Commission

For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us.

As part of God’s Church here in Loughborough, I call upon you to live out what you proclaim.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide?

By the Spirit’s power, we will.

Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love?

We will.

Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need?

We will

Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God?

We will

Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the worlds’ dark places?

We will

The Easter Candle is extinguished in silence.

Conclusion

The Lord is here.

His Spirit is with us.

Today we have remembered the coming of God’s power on the disciples and we invite that same Spirit to drive us out into the wild places of the world.

The Spirit of truth lead you into all truth,

give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

and strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

Amen

Filled with the Spirit’s power;

go in the light and peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia.

Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.

The servers and ministers process as an organ voluntary is played. Please sit and enjoy the music before extinguishing your candle. Refreshments are served after the service, everyone is very welcome to stay.
