Burton Chapel Monuments

We are reaching the final stages of the project to restore the Burton chapel by installing a new roof to stop water ingress. Today, the roof of the Burton Chapel has new lead sheets and the plaster of the interior walls is being renewed and decorated. The church has raised nearly £350,000 to pay for the work.

The final task is to conservation clean the important historical monuments and carved wood panelling. In the Burton chapel there is the monument to Thomas Burton, placed there in 1793 on the site of the chantry chapel established under the provisions of his will.

Either side of the chapel are monuments to Rectors of the church dating from the 1780s and 1790s. The carved wood panelling has been in place since 1932 when the present Burton chapel was created to celebrate the links between the Schools and the church. The panelling records the names of Heads, Governors and Old Boys who died in wartime, and after nearly a hundred years it is much in need of conservation cleaning.

The extra cost of conservation cleaning the three monuments and the wood panelling in the Burton Chapel is £9,400. The church would be grateful for any donations.
