Maundy Thursday Holy Communion

Cross

Maundy Thursday takes its name from mandatum, 'commandment' because of the use of the words of the 'new commanment' in John 13.34 in the traditional liturgy of this service.

It is during this service that the priest washes the feet of members of the congregation (everyone is welcome to take part but it is not compulsory,) as we hear the words of Jesus that we are to love one another as he has loved us.

We share communion knowing this is the night Jesus told us to take bread and wine in remembrance of him before entering into the agnoy of the Garden of Gethsemane.

The service ends in silence with the stripping of the sanctuary and a silent watch before the reserved sacrament.
